Winery in the Yarra Valley

The Yarra Valley is Victoria's oldest wine region and one of Australia's most celebrated. The region produces some of the country's best cool-climate pinot noir and chardonnay, alongside increasingly excellent cabernet, syrah and aromatic varieties. With over a hundred working wineries spread across just 90 square kilometres, the density of cellar doors makes day-trip wine tasting easier here than virtually anywhere else in Australia.

The cellar door experience varies enormously across the region. At the larger commercial wineries — Domaine Chandon, De Bortoli, Yering Station, Rochford — expect polished tasting rooms, full restaurant service, and structured tasting flights with paid tasting fees (typically refundable against purchase). At the smaller family-run operations — Yeringberg, Maddens Rise, Tokar Estate, Maddens Rise — you'll often be served by the winemaker themselves, with a more conversational tasting and a chance to hear directly about the season's wines.

Most cellar doors operate weekend hours (typically Friday through Sunday 11am-5pm) with limited weekday opening. Tasting flights typically run 5-8 wines for a fee between $10 and $25 per person, often refundable against a purchase of 2-3 bottles. Many venues also offer extended experiences — vineyard tours, blending sessions, food and wine pairings — booked in advance.

For first-time visitors, the easiest approach is to pick a base suburb (Yarra Glen and Coldstream are central to the wine region) and plan three to five cellar doors within a 15-minute drive. A typical day might include one major commercial cellar door, one or two smaller family wineries, and a winery restaurant lunch in between. Most visitors find the variety more rewarding than visiting five large operations.
