Mount Dandenong is the highest point in the Dandenong Ranges — 633 metres at the summit — and home to one of the region's most-visited restaurants, Sky High Mount Dandenong, which sits at the summit with panoramic views across Melbourne to Port Phillip Bay. The suburb takes its name from the mountain itself, which forms the dominant landscape feature of the eastern Melbourne skyline.

Beyond Sky High, the suburb is a small dispersed mountain village with B&Bs, garden retreats, and a handful of small dining venues. The character is firmly Dandenong Ranges rather than Yarra Valley — mountain ash forest, ferns, English garden settings, and the cool-climate weather that defines the ranges.
