Restaurants in Lilydale

Lilydale is the Yarra Valley's gateway town from Melbourne — the last suburban centre before the wine country begins, and the terminus of the metropolitan train line that connects the region to the city. For visitors driving from Melbourne, Lilydale is the moment the suburbs end and the Yarra Valley begins; for residents, it's the main commercial centre for shopping, services, and a busy daytime café scene.

The Lilydale dining scene is broader and more conventional than the cellar-door-heavy wine country to the east. Within the suburb you'll find dozens of cafés (Lilydale has one of the highest café densities in the eastern suburbs), family-friendly chain restaurants, Asian takeaways and modern casual venues, the Chirnside Park Country Club just to the east, and a handful of more ambitious restaurants on the main street.

The area also includes Mooroolbark just to the west — sometimes considered part of Lilydale for dining purposes — which adds another cluster of cafés and casual venues. Together, the Lilydale-Mooroolbark area covers most of the everyday dining needs for the region's residents and the substantial through-traffic of Yarra Valley day-trippers.

For visitors, Lilydale is more often a stop than a destination — a coffee on the way out to the wine country, or a casual dinner on the way back. The Yarra Valley's vineyard and restaurant heartland begins five kilometres east, in Coldstream and beyond.

The Lilydale train station is the eastern terminus of the metropolitan Lilydale line and the only direct public transport access to the broader Yarra Valley. Connecting bus services run from Lilydale Station out toward Healesville, Warburton and Yarra Glen but are infrequent.
