Bar in the Yarra Valley

The Yarra Valley's wine bar scene is younger and smaller than the region's restaurant and winery offerings, but it's grown steadily as Melbourne's hospitality energy has spread east. Modern wine bars and small-plate venues now operate across the main centres — Healesville and Yarra Glen particularly — offering an alternative to the cellar-door-then-restaurant template that dominates the rest of the regional dining scene.

The wine bar format suits the region: a focused list weighted toward Yarra Valley producers (with the occasional out-of-region or international addition), small plates designed for sharing rather than full mains, and atmospheres that range from intimate evening venues to all-day spots that transition from lunch into late afternoon drinks. Most bars open from 4pm and run through to late, with some opening earlier for weekend afternoons.

Look for venues like Herd in Healesville (which operates as both bar and café), the cocktail bars at Four Pillars and other distilleries, and the bar components of larger restaurants that operate independently of their dining rooms. Some country pubs also operate excellent public bars that function effectively as wine bars in their own right.

Pricing varies considerably. Expect $14-22 per glass for Yarra Valley wines, $18-26 for cocktails, $15-30 for small plates designed to share. Most bars are walk-in friendly except for peak Friday and Saturday evenings, when bookings are recommended for groups.
