Restaurants in Sassafras

An English-garden village in the Dandenong Ranges. Famous for boutique tea rooms, antique stores and weekend brunches.

About Sassafras

Sassafras is a Dandenong Ranges village famous for its English-garden village atmosphere, antique shops, and the iconic Miss Marple's Tearoom (one of the highest-traffic dining venues in the entire region, with 2,900+ Google reviews). The village sits in the heart of the Dandenongs at around 530 metres elevation, surrounded by mountain ash forest and English-style gardens.

The village centre is walkable and densely commercial β€” antique shops, cafΓ©s, tea rooms, a couple of restaurants, and the famous Pie in the Sky (closed but still remembered) sat alongside the road. The tea room culture is the dominant theme: Devonshire teas, high tea services, lace tablecloths, antique china. It's one of the few places in Victoria where the English country garden aesthetic feels genuine rather than thematic.

Most visitors arrive as part of a broader Dandenong Ranges day trip, often combining Sassafras with Olinda (10 minutes south) and Mount Dandenong (10 minutes north). The driving loop through the Dandenongs is one of Melbourne's classic Sunday drives.

The drive from Melbourne CBD takes 50-60 minutes via the Burwood Highway and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.
