Brewery in the Yarra Valley

The Yarra Valley craft brewing scene has emerged in the past 15 years as a genuine alternative to the region's wine reputation. A cluster of independent breweries — Coldstream Brewery, Hargreaves Hill, Watts River, Sailors Grave, Napoleone Brewers — operates taprooms open to the public, alongside several distilleries (most famously Four Pillars Gin in Healesville) that have brought small-batch spirits production to the same scene.

Most breweries operate taprooms with on-site food service — tasting paddles of 4-6 house beers, pints of seasonal releases, and a casual menu of pizzas, snacks, and sharing plates. The atmosphere is universally relaxed and family-friendly during daytime hours; some venues skew more to the late-afternoon and evening drinking crowd. The taprooms double as event spaces — most host live music, food truck nights, and seasonal events throughout the year.

Logistically, the breweries fit neatly into a Yarra Valley day-trip itinerary alongside winery visits. Coldstream Brewery sits in the heart of the wine region, just minutes from Domaine Chandon and Yering Station; Hargreaves Hill is in Healesville near the Sanctuary and the Terminus Hotel. Four Pillars Gin is a destination in its own right — the Healesville distillery has a tasting room, gin school sessions, and a small bar serving cocktails built on its own gins.

Tasting paddles typically run $20-30 for a flight of 4-6 beers. Pints sit at $9-12. Most venues are walk-in friendly though weekend tables can fill quickly — book ahead for groups. Designated drivers are welcome at most venues and typically don't pay tasting fees if they're not partaking.
