Restaurants Yarra Valley

Stones of the Yarra Valley

Stones is located in an old 1850s barn in the middle of the lush Yarra Valley countryside and boasts the grandiose feel of a cathedral, or perhaps merely a temple to good food. The light-filled space is crisscrossed with sturdy beams and pillars, with the tables lined up on either side of the room, leaving a dramatic aisle-like empty space in between. While the venue is ideal for weddings (there’s a chapel on-site) and other events, the restaurant is a worthy destination for lunching on chef Dale Prentice’s regional lunch platters or indulging in decadent feasts. For example, on certain Sundays, well-known Melbourne chef Greg Malouf puts on an enormous banquet of Middle Eastern mezze plates.

Yering Station

is the site of Victoria first vineyard, planted by the Ryrie brothers in 1838. The property was awarded the only Grand Prix for wine from the Southern hemisphere at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889. By the early 20th century, the industry was in decline and the area (including Yering Station) turned to dairy farming. In 1988, more than 75 years after the last vineyard had been removed; part of the original site was re-established with 22 acres of vines. A small cellar door facility operated on the site from 1992.
